Bio
June Fabian is a nephrologist and clinical epidemiologist with a special interest in the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Africa. She is the founding member of the African Research on Kidney Disease (ARK) Consortium, which includes collaborations across Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK.
She is the co-director of KidneyGenAfrica. Her research work has focused on CKD prevalence, the associated risk factors for CKD and biomarker limitations in African populations. Her work revealed creatine is a poor biomarker for estimated glomerular filtration rate equations and that the prevalence of CKD in Africa is being underestimates. Her findings have profound implications for individual care and population health in Africa. As the ARK Consortium, they are collaborating with colleagues at Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health to better understand genetic risk associated with CKD incidence and progression in African populations, and facilitate comparison with different population groups in the USA.
